Are you planning to pop the question to your significant other and want to ensure that the moment is captured beautifully? Planning a proposal is an exciting endeavor, and getting the perfect photos can make it even more memorable. From ensuring your partner looks their best to selecting the ideal location and time of day, here are some tips to help you plan a proposal photoshoot that you'll cherish forever.
Choose a Location
Before you even think about the photoshoot, make sure you have the proposal planned out. Choose a meaningful location that holds significance for both of you, whether it's where you first met, your favorite park, or a stunning viewpoint overlooking the city. Make sure to also visit the proposal location beforehand if you haven't been there before to scout out the best spots for the proposal or determine how to get there if your photographer has recommend a spot!
As a Hamilton Proposal Photographer myself, I always share my advice with those looking to propose to find the perfect location for them. You can view some of my top recommendations in my blog post Top Engagement Shoot Locations in Hamilton, Ontario linked here.
TIMING
The best time of day for a proposal photoshoot is during the golden hour, just after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. Not only will you get stunning photos, but the romantic atmosphere will also enhance the moment. Usually I recommend the hour before sunset for your actual proposal, this allows for some time after for photos and buffer in case things are delayed! You can view the sunset time for the date you choose online here.
PLAN FOR DISCRETION
If you want to capture the surprise on your partner's face, consider hiring a discreet photographer with experience photographing proposals. Make sure to talk with them ahead of time to discuss the plan and any specific shots you want to capture.
DRESS TO IMPRESS
While you can't outright trick your partner into dressing nicely without raising suspicions, you can subtly suggest the occasion. Plan a date night or special outing where dressing up is expected, then seize the moment to pop the question when the time is right!
Practice Makes Perfect
Rehearse your proposal and the moments leading up to it, so you know exactly where you'll be positioned for the best photos. Talk to your photographer as well as they will have advice on the best positioning for you. This will help ensure that the photographer captures every heartfelt moment without any awkwardness.
KEEP IT PERSONAL
Incorporate personal touches into the proposal and photoshoot to make it uniquely yours. Whether it's a favorite song playing in the background, a sentimental memento, or a special message written in chalk on the sidewalk, these details will add depth and meaning to your photos.
TAKE IT SLOW
Before you drop to one knee, make sure your partner is beside you and looking in your direction. While it may seem obvious, the excitement can sometimes make it slip your mind! Once you've reached your proposal spot, resist the urge to rush. Pause, take a breath, and soak in the moment—not only for the sake of the photographer striving to capture the proposal, but also for your partner's sake. Consider taking your partner's hand or sharing a little spiel to profess your love. Remember to stay calm and enjoy the moment. Trust in your planning and let the emotions of the proposal guide you.
Capture the Afterglow
Consider scheduling an engagement photoshoot shortly after the proposal to capture the glow of newly engaged bliss. This is a great way to document your love story and the start of your journey together. All my proposal collections include a photo session after the proposal and range from 10 minutes to an hour depending on the collection you choose. You can learn more here.
Celebrate Afterwards
After the proposal, take some time to celebrate together and bask in the joy of the moment. Treat yourselves to a cozy dinner at your favorite spot, gather with loved ones to share the excitement, or indulge in an activity that brings you both joy. Whatever you choose, make sure it reflects your unique bond and celebrates the magic of the moment you've just shared!
Planning a proposal photoshoot can be a thrilling experience, and with careful planning and attention to detail, you can ensure that the moment is beautifully captured for years to come. From setting the stage to selecting the perfect location and timing, these tips will help you create memories that will last a lifetime.
